Rock Garden Plants For The Alpine Garden

A Lot Of Alpines Are Great Seaside Plants!

Rock Garden Plants are great groundcover plants for seaside gardens. Alpines add color to rockeries and dry flower beds. These creeping plants are great for hanging over walls and rocks. Rock garden flowers are hardy perennials that are great in surviving harsh coastal conditions and poor soils.

Alpines are these small creeping plants that we so often see in an alpine garden, in a rock garden or cascading over a stone wall. Most of these types of rock garden plants originate from high altitudes where the plants have to cope with poor soil conditions and a lot of wind. Being used to these conditions makes them ideal candidates for seaside gardening.

The ground those alpine plants grow in is often very stony and free draining. Most of them therefore won't survive in boggy or wet soils. Once you provide them with a well drained soil and a reasonably sunny spot they will survive and perform in any garden.

Check out this page for choosing flowers for rock gardens.

Alpines Are Great Groundcover Plants

A lot of alpine plants like Aubretia or Cerastiums are mat-forming and make great groundcover plants. Cushion-forming alpines also like to fall over edges or stone walls. This looks particularly beautiful during spring when most of these great little performers flower.

Use Rock Garden Flowers For Your Containers

Alpine plants can also be used to grow in containers and window-boxes. Well done alpine troughs can look like a miniature landscape. You can use stone troughs or old sinks for this purpose. Rock garden flowers like Sempervivum, Saxifragas, Sedums or Armeria are amongst the most popular ones for this purpose.

Make sure to use a free draining soil mixture for alpine container gardening. You can add coarse sand, gravel or perlite for this purpose. And remember that alpines don't like a nutrient rich soil.
